Well, the Criers can take a deep breath. One-third of Season 3 is in the books, and I think we are all looking forward to a couple days of recovery. Out biggest audiences yet seemed to really take to what was, musically, one of our “crunchiest” programs ever. Christopher Hossfeld’s concerto GROSSO received a well-deserved [...]

Some places just call you back. Ever since A Far Cry’s first visit to Weston, Vermont last June, we have been plotting ways to return. There’s something about southern Vermont – its aggressively-beautiful landscapes perhaps, or maybe the way residents come together at the drop of a hat despite the (to a city-dweller) less-than-neighborly distances [...]

Yesterday saw the second of A Far Cry’s two concerts at Kneisel Hall. Bartok, Holst, Piazzolla, and Dvorak all were in fine form for a reinvigorated “Folklore.” Finally as an encore, A Far Cry brought down the house with Turceasca.
If any Blue Hill-ers were at the concert, we’d love to hear what you thought! [...]

We just received word that NPR’s Performance Today, with 1.2 million weekly listeners on 237 stations, will be featuring A Far Cry on Monday’s broadcast! They will be playing our Simple Symphony (Benjamin Britten) from March 23 in Marathon, Florida. Also, on their website they call us “irreverent” which is fine by me, even if [...]

This Saturday is a moment all of A Far Cry has been waiting for ever since a thrilling, enchanting performance last fall in a semi-secret location with our favorite eco-anarchist punk rock band, HUMANWINE. That night, we joined the band on some of their songs and presented their audience with a little Mozart and Bartok, [...]

On Sunday, May 21 (yep, that’s tomorrow) Criers and friends will play an impromptu concert in The Music Box featuring the impossibly beautiful Brahms Sextet in G Major. We hope that this will turn into a summer tradition, so stay tuned for other Music Box events over the next couple months as we keep our [...]

I’d like to extend the invitation to New Englander’s to visit IMAI (the International Musical Arts Institute) for chamber music concerts Wed-Sun for all of July, beginning July 8th, in the little town [...]

Kathryn Bacasmot authored these highly entertaining and thought-provoking program notes. Enjoy!

This is your shovel. The music is your earth. Dig in.
I know, I know. You’re looking at this and thinking, “these are the program notes? Where is the anecdotal story followed by interesting historical factoids, dates, and a roadmap to the music itself?” Don’t flip [...]

This morning I awoke from my fitful slumber to hear a familiar tune on the radio alarm. A Far Cry was playing Tchaikovsky’s Serenade on WGBH! I listened to the whole thing and didn’t even get a chance to shower before leaving for work at 8am. The program will be repeating at 10am, so from [...]

Wow – what an incredible trip to the Florida Keys! The audiences were amazing, the hospitality was out-of-this-world, and our rental Priuses only used $20 of gas to go 500 miles. What a tour. Here are a few photos, mostly from a couple of educational concerts from Tuesday morning: Courtenay, Frank, Annie, and I played [...]

A Far Cry arrived in the Florida Keys today, and this is my first time here. The beauty everywhere took me by surprise, and being so completely surrounded by water (even the humidity in the air) makes me feel like a completely new person. I think that I can expand and be more fully myself [...]

The Boston Globe’s Jeremy Eichler was kind enough to attend and review our Friday night concert at St. Paul’s Church in Brookline – our first Globe review! If you read today’s Globe and are visiting us for the first time, welcome. Please poke around our website – there are many hidden treasures. Tickets for our [...]

At our concerts this past weekend, we asked audience members to fill out feedback surveys. We’re just beginning to sort through all of the great ideas and information, but I wanted to share one particularly cool use of technology. One of the questions was simply “What did you think of the concert?” – I took [...]

Years ago, I’m sitting in a car with a group of people, heading
somewhere – a music festival? A bassist is driving the car, I think.
We are having a great time listening to Bela Fleck when the driver
decides that it is time to turn things up a notch.
“Listen to this,” he says, puts in a Kronos [...]

Maker Profile – Steampunk on MAKE: television from make magazine on Vimeo.
Humanwine is an awesome Boston band which A Far Cry has been honored to join in performance. Their sound defies easy description, but “eco-anarchist punk rock” comes sort of close. The video above features a performance (toward the end) of Humanwine with Crier Ashley [...]

Our trip to Duluth was probably one of our most successful trips to a new town we’ve ever had! We flew over for two nights only- played in a performance class at University of Minnesota Duluth Music Department, then got to listen to their awesome unconducted string orchestra, and ended the day with a concert [...]
