Bassist Karl Doty was born and raised in Duluth, MN. He began piano and singing at an early age before making the move to double bass. He received his Bachelor’s degree in performance in 2007 from the New England Conservatory, and his Master’s degree in performance in 2009 on a full scholarship from the same institution. Karl has recorded and toured in with a variety of musicians including Edgar Meyer, Darol Anger, Heather Masse, the Borromeo String Quartet, Joe Walsh, Michi Wiancko and Morning Zephyr, to name a few. Karl plays in K2, which is an eight stringed original fiddle collaboration with violinist Kip Jones. Karl regularly tours and has recorded for EMI with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He has performed as a soloist with A Far Cry, BMOP and the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra. Other performances with New Century chamber orchestra in San Francisco, guest principal bass with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and principal bass with the New Bedford Symphony. An active chamber musician, Karl has performed with the Andover, North Country, Long Lake, and Walden chamber players as well as on NEC’s prestigious First Monday concert series. Karl has toured internationally as part of the Schleswig-Holstein and Verbier festival orchestras.
