Bassist Karl Doty was born and raised in Duluth, MN. He grew up in a musical household and began playing piano and singing at an early age before making the move to double bass. He received his Bachelor’s degree in double bass performance in 2007 from the New England Conservatory, and his Master’s degree in 2009 on a full scholarship from the same institution. Outside of playing in A Far Cry, Karl has also recorded and toured nationally and internationally with the Grammy award winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Being versed in different musical languages, Karl is currently a member of a quartet with fiddle player Darol Anger, mandolinist Joe Walsh and guitarist Grant Gordy. He is also plays in K2, which is an eight stringed original fiddle collaboration with violinist Kip Jones. He has performed as a soloist at home and on tour with A Far Cry, BMOP and the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra. Other performances include the Boston Pops, New Century Chamber Orchestra, guest principal bass with the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and principal bass with the New Bedford Symphony. An active chamber musician, Karl has performed with the Andover, North Country, Long Lake, and Walden chamber players as well as on NEC’s prestigious First Monday concert series. This year will find Karl playing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as well as serving as principal bass with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.
