A fantastical creature. A forgotten history. A new musical world coming to life.
In the Making is a special project, outside of our subscription series, that brings stories to life through an immersive multimedia format in concert and recording.
Part family myth, part imagined folklore, Land of the Northern Frog traces the story of Beecher’s great-grandfather August Kiis, who traveled the Estonian countryside collecting folk songs. Performed by GRAMMY®-nominated bassoonist Martin Kuuskman and A Far Cry, the piece imagines August’s journey continuing into the mythical underworld, where he meets the legendary Põhja Konn — the Northern Frog — who is simultaneously a monster and a protector in Estonian lore.
Interwoven with projections, archival family recordings, and live narration, the concert also includes Beecher’s The Conference of the Birds (a 2017 A Far Cry commission) and a new arrangement of his One Hundred Years Grows Shorter Over Time, helping us connect with our own family legacies and history through this deeply personal musical journey.
Music from this performance will be recorded for release on Crier Records.
