Hagar Shirman

Hagar has more than a decade of experience as a bilingual educator (Spanish/English) in Boston Public Schools, currently working as a school librarian in a dual-language school in East Boston. She often sees her role, in both her personal and professional life, as a connector–connecting people with information they need and with other individuals who share similar interests. She is also passionate about the performing arts, regularly attending many theatre, dance, and music performances across the region.

Hagar was first introduced to A Far Cry in 2015, when she attended her first concert alongside then 6-year-old Robin, a budding violinist. Since that day, it has been her joy to attend many more AFC concerts and to introduce A Far Cry to colleagues and friends. Both Hagar’s children are string musicians in the ProjectSTEP program, which is a frequent AFC collaborator. Hagar currently serves as the Parent Representative to the ProjectSTEP Board, in a liaison role that highlights parent voices and concerns on the Board. Her older child, Robin, had the incredible opportunity through ProjectSTEP to play side-by-side with the Criers during the 2024-2025 season, which was a dream come true for them.

Hagar has a BA in Art and Art History from the University of Washington in Seattle, an MLIS (Master’s in Library & Information Science) from Simmons University, and a Master’s in Education (M.Ed.) from UMass-Boston (through the Boston Teacher’s Residency Program). She lives in East Boston with her two children, Robin and Alma, who are also avid AFC fans. Hagar was honored to be invited to join the AFC Board in 2025 and looks forward to bringing her background and passion to this work.
