Jessie Montgomery
Rhapsody No. 1 for Solo Violin (2014)

Paired with artworks by Jamaul Smith and Mikaela Fishman

Megumi Stohs Lewis, violin (online performance)

Jamaul’s work presents beautiful stylized drawings that depict representations of black women being free. Solely holding their own ground in their beauty, the radiance in their facial features is juxtapositioned next to concrete, often seen as cold and bare. However, the soft iridescent sky creates an electromagnetic connection, echoing the women’s radiance.  The brilliant creative radiance of Jessie Montgomery, herself a BIPOC composer, carries this echo further.  And finally, Megumi stands alone in all of her strength and glory, surrounded by natural beauty and nothing but musical tones floating through the air. Gracefully holding her own.

Jamaul Smith

Artwork paired with Montgomery: Rhapsody No. 1 for Solo Violin

Marketing artist Jamaul Smith found his passion for Art in 3rd Grade. Jamaul followed this passion to Syracuse University, where he earned a degree in Illustration. Growing up between New Mexico and the Maryland-DC area, Jamaul's artistic style developed into a mashup of West & East Coast influences. Urban landscapes, like those found around his new hometown of Boston, collide with signature stylistic elements (like 90s-styled cars, trucks, and classic bicycles). Sprinkled with culturally relevant hangouts influenced by each city he called home. They mingle with traditional and digital methods to capture the proud African, Caribbean, and Latinx heritage within the African Diaspora. Black women take center stage in each skillfully crafted vignette. He has worked with many notable brands, including Adidas, Boost Mobile, Puma, the National Black Caucus, etc. Various book illustrations, apparel designs, numerous art shows, commission pieces, and passion projects round out his Artist's resume. Jamaul is the artistic muscle that brings several brands' creative visions to life.

Mikaela’s collection of art feels organic, inspired by components of nature, and she uses a variety of practices to represent her vision. Her current collection’s tight connection is her use of contrast and shape, sometimes defined clearly and precisely but also with a touch of the obscure. Her work is paired with Montgomery’s Rhapsody for its grounded connection to nature.  Consider her delicately drawn image of the butterfly alongside Montgomery’s open, pure, sound world. You can imagine this little insect floating freely through the air as each note holds sonic space.
